The last home game of the season for the College of Charleston volleyball team was on Tuesday night. They played host to UNCW in an absolute thriller. The Cougars topped UNCW in five sets, meaning they will head next weeks’s CAA conference tournament as the fifth seed.
In a storybook finish, Captain Melissa Morello had the game-winning kill in her last home game of her career. Morello said after the game, “It was definitely an exciting way to end playing on this home floor. I love this gym I love all the memories I have made here. I am really grateful for my teammates they made it fun tonight. They made it fun all season.”
In the first set, UNCW got out to a 17-12 lead before the Cougars called their first timeout.
After the timeout the Cougars battled back to take a late lead to win the first set 25-23. Melissa Morello led the way with four digs and nine kills while Devon Rachel also had five digs and three kills.
UNCW came out strong in the second set and took the set from the Cougars. The lead grew quickly after the Cougars fell behind. UNCW ended up winning the set, 25-10.
Blocks seems were key throughout the entire match. It seemed whoever blocked more would win the set. After the second set, UNCW had out blocked Charleston 5.0-1.0.
Yet, the Cougars were not discouraged and stormed back and battled with UNCW. The third set was full of excitement and energy from both teams.
After Charleston trailed by a narrow margin early, a timeout sparked a run, as they finished the set with a 25-19 win.
UNCW was not going to go down easy, which led to a battle of a match.
UNCW raced out to a 15-10 lead and managed to keep the Cougars at a distance for most of the set. UNCW won the set 25-18.
The match was tied 2-2, and the Cougars were being lifted by a strong performance by Morello who had ten digs and 16 kills.
In the final set the Cougars got out to a hot start. They got out to a 12-7 when UNCW called a timeout.
UNCW then fired back with five straight points to a tie. The two teams remained neck and neck until Morello got a kill to win the game, and closed out her career at TD Arena. Morello finished the match with 21 digs and 11 kills along with Kennedy Madison who finished with 12 digs and Rachel with 11 kills and 9 digs.
The Cougars won the thriller in five sets boasting their record to 17-12 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Their next game is on the road against Delaware on Fri. The conference tournament begins Fri., Nov. 20 and runs through Mon. Nov. 23.
