On the morning of Wednesday, Feb 22, three mysterious tanks washed up on an Isle of Palms beach. The massive tanks prompted calls from residents to the Isle of Palms Police Department, which quickly blocked off the scene.

After investigation, it was determined that the tanks were ballast tanks which were empty and not hazardous. Ballast tanks are compartments on ships that hold water and improve the ship’s stability.

The Isle of Palms Police Department located the owner of the tanks and arranged for him to retrieve them from the beach where they had washed up. According to a tweet from the Isle of Palms Police Department, the owner of the tanks began to remove them from the beach with a tugboat by 11 a.m. All three ballast tanks were removed from the beach by Wednesday evening.
