Internet facilitates crime-followers

Crime blotters and police reports tell the public when crimes are committed. The media covers prominent trials and updates the masses on developments in high-profile proceedings. But now anyone can stay updated on every step in obscure criminal cases they may care about.
Vinelink.com lets users track offenders’ progress through the legal system for free. Participating corrections facilities also update custody statuses on Vinelink, according to the Web site.
Vinelink is the National Victim’s Notification Network’s online version of the Victim Information Notification Everyday program, according to the Web site.
Users select their state and county, then search for offenders by name or offender ID.
Vinelink offers text or e-mail updates on changes in offenders’ statuses.
Web sites such as familywatchdog.us and nsopw.gov give concerned citizens a registry of sex offenders according to neighborhood.
Vinelink covers 46 states, including South Carolina and Charleston County specifically.
Concerned parents, prospective home buyers, affected parties and interested acquaintances can now go beyond the weekly crime blotter to satisfy their criminal curiosity and keep track of offenders of interest.
