Men’s and women’s golf teams open in powerful events

Neil Gowan and Seth Stuart tied for 12th in the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate in Florence, S.C., to lead all College of Charleston golfers in the opening weekend of play for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Charleston finished sixth out of 15 teams in Florence, 10 shots behind tournament winners Furman.

The women opened the season by hosting a star-studded event at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan. The Cougars finished 16th after closing the first day in ninth place, but all but one of the teams that finished ahead of Charleston are from the Atlantic Coast or Southeastern conferences.

Kathy Boehm, who opened with a 69 in the first round, led the Cougars with a 30th-place finish, followed by Vanessa Koechli in 72nd.

Austin Ernst, who won the NCAA individual title last season, took medalist honors to guide LSU to a 16-under-par 848 and a five-shot win over North Carolina in the team competition.

The men return to play next weekend at the Mason Randolph Invitational in Franklin, Tenn., while the women travel to State College, Pa., on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 for the Nittany Lion Invitational, while the
