This past Tuesday night the CofC Volleyball team hosted the Charleston Southern University Buccaneers in a non-conference match up.
The Cougars were feeling confident going into the game, after obtaining a 3-1 tournament win from the previous weekend.
CofC took a strong lead during the middle of the first set, leaving the Buccaneers behind 20-12. CSU started to come back towards the end of the set, but the Cougars finished it off with a 25-20 victory.
The second set was looking much like the first as the Cougars left the Buccaneers in the dust after pulling ahead with the demanding lead. This time CSU was unable to make any kind of come back and the Cougars shut them down with a 25-16 win.
Going into the third set, the Cougars were certain it was going be the last of this match. The Cougars, once again, took the lead early in the set. CofC easily gained another win of 25-16 and swept the Buccaneers making this their first 3-0 match victory at home.
“We played five matches last weekend the team is pretty tired so I’m happy with how we came out and played, getting everybody and getting a good win at home,” says head coach Jason Kepner about the team’s performance. “We haven’t won 3-0 at home so this is our first 3-0 at home, I couldn’t be happier with the way they played.”
Freshman Sloan White played an amazing game for the Cougars, making a total of 11 kills. Defensively for CofC, junior Emily Shelton and freshman Andi Zbonjniewicz both lead the team in digs with 12 each. The Cougars forced a total of 7 blocks against CSU.
After a great victory from Tuesday night as well as the tournament win from this past weekend, the Cougars are more than ready for their first conference match at home this weekend against the Citadel. The game will be played at 7PM on Friday Sept. 23rd in the TD Arena. The Cougars will also play Elon at home on Sunday at 2PM.
