Cougar Challenge a win for Men’s Tennis

The Cougars closed their fall season with a bang this past weekend at the Cougar Challenge as they took on opponents from Jacksonville University, Wofford, and Presbyterian.

Throughout the tournament, only Bryan Roberts (Charlotte, N.C.) remained undefeated, though the entire team contributes wins to ensure the competition championship.

The first day of the tournament saw the team take home wins in four of the six single flights. Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France), Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile), and Roberts each took down their opponents in two easy sets, with Brice Allanic (Colombes, France) suffering a near defeat in his 7-5, 6-7. 4-1 flight. Chris Toussaint (Charlotte, NC) and Billy Kenny (Pawley’s Island, SC) both suffered heartbreaking defeat at the hands of their Jacksonville competitors. Though Kenny faced another rough flight in his doubles round with Lesser, Toussaint teamed up with Roberts to win his doubles flight. To complement their single wins, Trintignac and Lesser worked together to win the Doubles Flight 1 9-7.

The second day of play saw the Cougars trample over the Wofford team. Lesser and Kenny easily did away with their opponents in two sets, while Trintignac, Roberts, Allanic, and Toussaint all fought through the complete three sets to ensure their victories. Despite their quick wins, Lesser and Kenny fell in their doubles match 8-4. Doubles Flight 1 was won by the Trintignac and Allanic pair while Roberts and Toussaint finished up the doubles round with an 8-4 win.

Following this day of eight out of a possible nine wins Head Coach Jay Bruner said, “We played with great focus today. Our goal was to improve from one day to the next and I think the guys were up for the challenge. We played smart in the doubles and got our intensity up even more for the singles. It showed in the way we started each first set and each player concentrated on what they could control on their court. The momentum from each court to the next was also an improvement- it was entertaining to watch every match.”

The third and final day at the match again saw the Cougars dominate their opponents. Trintignac, Lesser, Roberts, Allanic, and Kenny quickly decimated the players from Presbyterian in the singles matches with each only taking two sets to secure their win. The Flight 1 Championship was awarded to Trintignac, while the Flight 2 went to Lesser, Flight 3 went to Roberts, and Flight 4 was awarded to Allanic.

The doubles saw the Tringitnac and Allanic team suffer their first defeat of the tournament. The newly formed Lesser/Tom Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) team won the Doubles Flight 2 8-5, and the duo of Roberts and Toussaint won with an 8-6 set, ensuring their Doubles Flight 3 Championship.

Bruner said of the tournament, “Overall it was a great weekend for the Cougars. There were challenges that each player had to overcome each day to compete their best and I thought we did a super job of getting up for the challenge.”
“It was a good opportunity to get these matches in November to end the fall season. We have lots of hard work ahead as we prepare for the spring schedule, but we know what is ahead of us and I’m excited to see what this group is capable of as a team.”

The Cougars do not play again until Jan 15 when they take on Clemson University. As always, follow the tennis team, as well as the rest of College of Charleston athletics, at and get live updates from @GeorgeStSports on Twitter.
