Cougars fall in tough game against Charleston Southern

After three tough losses on the road, the Cougars faced their first defeat at home, falling 64-45 to Charleston Southern.

Charleston Southern took the early lead thanks to two turnovers and a foul against the college, making their lead 5-0 before Cathryn Hardy’s (Dayton, OH) 2 pointer put the team on the board. CSU would manage another 7 points before Latisha Harris (Aynor, SC) would manage to power through with 2 points of her own. Things seemed to be turning around for the Cougars as they quickly responded to CSU’s free throw point with Christy Hewatt’s (Cumming, GA) 3-pointer, narrowing the gap to 13-7. However, this was the tightest the team was going to see the gap, as CSU domineered the ball for the rest of the half, allowing the Cougars only 12 more points while Charleston Southern racked up another 27, making the score going into the half 40-19.

The second half opened with a two minute stalemate with rebounds on either end of the court thwarting any attempt to add points to the board. Charleston Southern managed to break it with a 2-pointer, but Alyssa Frye (Chester, VA) quickly responded to this with a 3-pointer, bringing the score to 42-22. After another two points to the Cougars, the defense came to the table, holding off Charleston Southern’s attempts for three minutes. Ultimately, in spite of several attempts at a comeback from the Cougars, CSU managed to keep a firm hold on their lead, finishing the game 64-45.

The freshmen proved their worth through the game with Hewatt giving the Cougars 12 points and Mikaela Hopkins (Augusta, GA) racking up 10 rebounds.

The Cougars fall to 1-3 for their season games. The team next plays at the TD Arena Sat. at 1 against Furman in the first conference game of the season.
