Photo Essay: CofC Sailing

CisternYard News photographer Emily Bradbury was out on the water in Charleston Harbor last weekend as the College of Charleston hosted the SAISA Men’s Singlehanded Championship.

Cougar sailor and 2012 Olympian Juan Maegli won eight straight races to open the regatta and easily claimed first place overall and a qualifying spot at the Singlehanded National Championships, which will be in Long Beach, Calif., on Nov. 2 to 4.

Maegli, who carried the flag for his native country Guatemala in London, placed ninth out of 49 entrants in the Olympic Laser class. He has already won the collegiate singlehanded championship once, in 2009, before taking two years off to prepare for the London Games.

Other CofC sailors competing in the 12-boat rotation were freshman Dodge Rees, who finished fourth, sophomore Chris Sands in fifth, and junior Roy Shaw in sixth.

Look for a feature on Maegli and fellow London Olympian Andrew Lawrence, who plays point guard on the College’s men’s basketball team, when the first issue of The Yard magazine hits the street on Oct. 11.
