College mourns the loss of two students

Two students at the College were found dead this past weekend. Their deaths were unrelated.

Richard Martin died in his apartment in Warren Place on Friday April 12, 2013. He died in his sleep and was found by his roommate.

Martin transferred to the College from Greenville Tech, which is located in his hometown of Greenville, SC, in 2010. He was a business major and made strong connections with his professors, including Professor Stephen Litvin, Dr. Howard Rudd and former president of the College Judge Alex Sanders. Martin would have graduated this May.

William “John” Martin was found deceased by his roommate in his off campus apartment on Kracke Street on April 13, 2013.

John was a Biology major from Gaffney, SC. He loved his work-study position in the Psychology Department where he looked after and nurtured pigeons. John also looked forward to participating in a Marine Biology trip this May.

“We are terribly saddened that last weekend we lost two students who loved the College of Charleston, loved our professors and just loved being here,” Evie Nadel, Senior Director of Community Relations.

Private funeral services were held for these two students, but anyone wishing to set up a memorial should contact Nadel.

“It’s not just a loss for the friends and families of the students, it is a loss for the entire community,” Nadel said.
