I started writing for CisternYard a little over three years ago. Some news stories here and there, but nothing too serious. If you’d have told me then that one day I would be in this position, writing this letter, I would’ve called you crazy. Sure I love writing, and I always have, but that future just seemed so far off, that I couldn’t even imagine it. After a recent turn of events, I get to say that I’ve finally made it here. Now I’m sitting at the big desk, calling the shots. It’s taken some getting used to, don’t get be wrong, but I couldn’t be happier. I’ve rekindled my passion for journalism and this issue that you have in your hands now, that’s my baby.

I like to think that I’m transitioning into this position smoothly, learning as I go and sometimes just hoping for the best. What’s remarkable is that there’s also another transition occurring simultaneously. It’s happening all around you and it comes alive in the pages of this magazine. I sat down with President Benson to discuss his time here, and to consider the many opportunities that lie ahead. As reports of the presidential search and talks of a potential merger with MUSC can be heard in passing at almost any moment, its clear that the College is going through a transition too.

In this time, we have to remember that change isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, it allows you to learn and grow. In this issue, we share the story of student Kyle Woodward, who took a chance on Fields of Growth and found his passion volunteering with children in Jamaica and Uganda, teaching them his favorite game: lacrosse.

For the sports fans out there, we also highlight the career of men’s basketball star Willis Hall. After a terrible ACL injury and spending a year on the bench, this “old man” is back and ready to lead the Cougars in his final season. Instead of letting a devastating injury ruin his career, Hall persevered.

With all of this in mind, I encourage you to find inspiration in this issue. Reconsider an opportunity you may have ignored, seek out a new experience, take a chance on someone, and if nothing else – try out some delicious mug cake recipes as you mull it over.
