This year’s Study Abroad Fair did not disappoint and in fact, exceeded expectations, offering new and improved programs from the College of Charleston. Mainly focusing on Summer 2015 programs, the countries of choice range from some of the world’s oldest rice fields in Bali to the romantic, starry cities in Italy and down to the heart of South Africa. Whether you are a geology or film major, aspiring entrepreneur of the sort or even simply looking for life experience, look no further. Here is a summary of some of the most talked about programs.

  • Shout out to biology majors! The trip you need to take is to Bali, Indonesia. Led by College of Charleston Biology Professor, Dr. Phillip Dustan, students will focus on the human and natural ecology of the tropics and get to do hands-on activities that could not possibly be offered in the four walls of a classroom. Biology courses are offered for major and non-majors so go and experience what is being discussed by professors and biologists, such as the degrading quality of the reefs through the natural, ecological processes. Students are given this opportunity to see face-to-face what is happening in our fragile ecosystem and all in the lovely paradise of Bali.

            Dates: May 19-June 9, 2015;  Deadline: March 2, 2015

  • Passionate about geology, social issues and human culture? With this two and a half week trip to South Africa, Geology majors will be in heaven studying onsite some of the world’s greatest geological grounds in Cape Town and Johannesburg that date back to Proterozoic to Paleozoic to Modern. The Geology and Environmental Field Experience course will be offered to even further the hands on experience. Not only will students gain field experience, they will gain life experience, exposing themselves to the social issues that South Africa faces, such as polluted and limited water sources. Students will also get a firsthand look into the everyday South African life and culture with visits to the Sterkfontein World Heritage site and Kruger National Park. What a perfect opportunity to see new places, meet new people and become more worldly cultured!

            Dates: June 9- June 30, 2015; Deadline: February 7, 2015

If your passion lies with writing, film industry or any related arts, your prayers have been answered with the Spoleto trip to Italy. Students are offered courses in creative writing and film studies, all to experience in Charleston’s sister city, Spoleto. Writers will read books and practice travel writing in a creative nonfiction workshop while film majors will view classic, Italian screenings and visit Cinecitta, the largest, most well-known motion picture studio in Italy. This trip will be led by College of Charleston professors Bret Lott and John Bruns, both experienced and respected in their field of study. When asked about the highlight of the trip, New York Times best-selling author Bret Lott eagerly stated it is the private cooking lesson and the incredible food. Students shouldn’t pass up this offer to study literature, meet professional artists and writers and to experience it all in the dreamy cities of Italy.

           Dates: May 17- June 20, 2015; Deadline: March 2, 2015
