An open letter to Attorney General Alan Wilson

Come on, Alan, you need to let it go.

Do you mind if I call you Alan? I’m going to anyway. I think if I speak to you like we’re pals, I might actually get through. But I’m sure you have other things to do with your time than worry about same-sex marriage. There’s no need to go through with this appeal to remove the right of same-sex couples to marry in our beautiful Palmetto State. It’s just a waste of time. The Federal Court already said it was unconstitutional to ban same-sex marriage.
I’m telling you this as a friend – you’re just making a fool of yourself. There’s no rational reason for you to be this way. You think South Carolina will face “irreparable injury” (Post and Courier) if we allow dudes to marry dudes? Come on, man. We both know you’re being a bit melodramatic. So just calm down, go for a walk to clear your head and just put your priorities in perspective.
I promise if we let women marry women and men marry men, there won’t be a mass plague or frogs that fall from the sky as punishment. The only thing that will happen is women will marry women and men will marry men. I promise it’s not that scary.
I know, I know, you probably feel a little grossed out when you see same-sex couples showing some PDA. But don’t worry, man. I’m sure some people felt that way about seeing you being affection with a significant other in your lifetime.
Yet no one stopped you from marrying your wife Jennifer. I mean, how would you feel if someone said you couldn’t marry Jen? I bet you’d be pretty pissed. Well, that’s the way a lot of people feel about you right now.
You just need to get it together and look at this from another perspective. It can be hard to look at things from a new point of view when you’ve been spoon fed one idea your entire life, but you’re a smart man. You can figure it out.
And what you need to figure out is that allowing same-sex couples to marry may feel like a moral dilemma to you. But it’s not. Your marriage won’t be cheapened if same-sex couples are allowed to marry. Your children won’t be tarnished or exposed to something evil.
The only thing that will happen is that people of different sexual orientations will have the right to marry. They can choose love and they can choose a life of happiness. Or they can get a divorce down the road. But give them the option to make that choice just like the rest of us because the legality of same-sex marriage is inevitable. You can’t stop it, so just stop fighting it.

Your pal,
Ashley Sprouse
