Charleston Softball sweeps doubleheader with Delaware

In a Saturday doubleheader, the College of Charleston softball team swept the day’s games with Delaware, 2-1 and 5-3, at Patriots Point.

Game one began with a pitching duel, as neither team could get anything going offensively. Charleston’s pitcher, Hope Klicker, had another dominating outing giving up only one run through 5.1 innings pitched.

In the top of the fifth with no score, Delaware launched a home run to dead center to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Hens added a triple in the same inning, but were unable to bring the runner in.

The Cougars wasted no time coming back, as in the bottom of the fifth, leadoff batter Mackenzie Maples got on base and Carly Hansis then ripped a game-tying double.

CofC struck again in the bottom of the sixth, as Maples dribbled an infield single after two sac bunts to drive the runner in from third for the game-deciding run.

In game two, Charleston got going offensively much earlier.

CofC put up four runs in the bottom of the second.

With the bases loaded, Sarah Garcia grounded out to drive in Katie Padilla for the game’s first run. Victoria Bratcher converted on a bunt single RBI and advanced to second on the throw. Maples then drove in both Bratcher and Allison Pedigo for the 4-0 lead.

The Cougars’ starter, Samantha Martin picked up her eighth win of the season, going 5.2 innings and giving up just one run.

Delaware scored two runs in the sixth inning to close the gap to 4-3, but CofC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Charleston will go for the series sweep of the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
