Student Employee Appreciation Week: Dedication and balance pay off on campus

April 13 marks the commencement of a whole week dedicated to the importance of student employees on college campuses. As part of a nationally recognized program involving colleges all over the country, College of Charleston will host a series of events throughout the week geared toward its student employees and on Wednesday of next week, a Student Employee of the Year will be selected from a pool of 18 selected nominees from the College. The winner will move forward for consideration at the national level.

The nominees, from various departments within the College, all submitted nomination letters to a formal committee that will review the submissions and choose a winner. Selection of this winner occurs on the basis of five criteria points developed by the Southern Association of Student Employee Administrators: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of contribution. “The ultimate goal,” reiterated Mahogany King, Assistant Student Employee Coordinator, “is to let everyone know that we could not do what we do without student employees.” Below is a slideshow of photos and brief descriptions of all the nominees from CofC.

Student employees play a crucial role in the daily function and routine of the campus. “If you go into any office on campus, there’s a student employee there assisting in format,” King said. “We want to praise their ability to balance working with also being a full time student.”

The Career center will hold a variety of different events throughout the week to show their appreciation. On Monday, student employees can go to the Career Center to pick up a Verde coupon; on Tuesday they can “pop” into the career center for resume advice and fresh popcorn. On Wednesday, by invitation only, the reception honoring the Student Employee of the Year takes place. On Thursday student employees can go to the Career Center for a coupon toward any dining location on campus and on Friday there is a special surprise in store for those who stop by the Career Center at 2:00 pm.

Everyone in the Career Center looks forward to the special week of events and the opportunity to exclusively recognize student employees. “They (student employees) bring an innovative perspective to the daily work life,” King passionately expressed. “Especially with things like social media and technology, they keep us on our feet and force us never to get settled.”
