Charleston was able to beat Charleston Southern in their home opener, needing just four sets thanks to the great play of Melissa Morello among others.
The Cougars picked up right where they left off in their last match, against Alabama, scoring seven straight points to take an early 16-9 lead.
Charleston Southern tried to fight back but could never fully gain enough control or momentum to win the first set.
Morello was a key part in Charleston’s early success as she had six digs and four kills that led to the Cougars taking the first set (25-18).
After Charleston Southern tied the second set in the earlygoing (2-2) the Cougars stormed back to score 17 straight points to take a remarkable (19-2) lead.
Charleston Southern struggled to get anything going once again scoring only eight points in the second set as the Cougars rolled to a (25-8) win and a (2-0) match lead.
Morello continued her strong performance having an additional five digs and two kills to bring her total to 11 digs and six kills at the halfway mark. With a 12th dig Morello would reach a 1,000 digs for her career.
Devon Rachel also shined early as she had a solid four digs and seven kills after two sets of play.
In the third set, the Cougars looked to finish the match in a sweep but Charleston Southern had other plans.
In the early going of a battled tested third set, Morello reached yet another milestone in her career. With her 12th dig of the match she reached 1,000 career digs just one game after she reached 1,000 kills for her career.
Both teams battled back and forth all throughout the third set and it seemed at first like neither one would be able to pull away. Charleston Southern ended up coming out on top winning 10 of the last 11 points of the set to take it (25-15).
Charleston Southern tried to push the match to a fifth set but the Cougars were not having it.
Charleston had control for most of the fourth set not letting Charleston Southern gain any ground. Even though Southern made a small run at the end,scoring three points in a row, the Cougars were able to win the next point to win the set (25-18).
The Cougars played a real fluid game against Charleston Southern winning (3-1) in the match and their third straight win of the season. Charleston is now (4-4) on the season.
Their next game is at the TD Arena on Friday Sept. 11, as the Cougars are playing host to Jacksonville in the opening game in the Charleston Invitational.
