Christopher Bates, student at the College dies in bike accident

Christopher Landis Bates, a senior Exercise Science major, passed away from complications of a bike accident downtown on Thursday. He died from head trauma at MUSC, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin said Friday.

Bates, 21, was from Columbia S.C. and according to The State, was a “terrific student who talked about going to medical school after college. He played a year of baseball at USC-Salkehatchie before transferring to the College of Charleston to focus on academics.”

According to an email sent out to all College of Charleston students from Evelyn Nadel, the Senior Director of Community Relations, Chris “loved the College of Charleston, the city of Charleston, Ultimate Frisbee and Baseball.  He has a wonderful loving family and an amazing group of friends.”  Students are planning a campus memorial service later this week.

Condolences to the family can be sent to this address:
