Volleyball team completes weekend sweep

The College of Charleston volleyball team played host to Elon and William and Mary over the weekend. The Cougars played very well in both matches, extending their winning streak to three games.

Friday night, the College completed their season sweep of Elon (6-21, 2-12) in straight sets. Earlier in October, in their first meeting at Elon, the College defeated them in four sets.

The first set was a very close, neither team was really pulling ahead and there was a lot of back and forth play. Charleston would eventually win the set 25-20, behind play of freshmen Devon Rachel who contributed with three digs and four kills.

The second set was dominated by the Cougars from the very beginning. After taking an early 13-7 lead, the Cougars never looked back,  The Cougars would continue their dominance throughout the set and win 25-17.

Up two sets already, the Cougars once again showed their dominance in the third set (25-17). Charleston’s great play was highlighted by Rachel’s six digs and 10 kills and senior Morello also brought in four digs and 11 kills.

Saturday night the Cougars hosted William and Mary for senior night.

Prior to the game, a brief ceremony celebrated the decorated careers of Charleston’s three seniors; Grace Rebarchak, Kayla Tronick, and Melissa Morello.

The match began with a back and forth first set. Even though Charleston held a 24-23 lead, they could not hold on as William and Mary won the final three points to take the set (26-24).

The Cougars came back in the second and played at a much higher level. Star player and senior  Morello shined finishing the second set with 8 digs and 13 kills. The Cougars won the set by a score of 25-14.

The third set was a hard fought battle between both teams and neither team could get an edge.

Again behind Morello’s play, the Cougars were able to take the third set 25-23. Beckman also played well contributing 8 digs and 2 kills up to that point.

The four set of the match to no surprise was tightly contested. Charleston would take a late 24-21 lead, looking to clinch the win. William and Mary kept fighting and would eventually tie the set 24-24, but their comeback magic ran out, as Charleston won 26-24 behind Morello’s performance of 15 digs and 25 kills. Senior Kayla Tronick also played well finishing with 3 digs and 15 kills.

The Cougars (16-12, 8-6) sit at fifth in the CAA standings with just two games remaining in the regular season. Their final home game is Tuesday night (7 p.m.) against UNCW.
