Christmastime in the City: A Holiday Event Calendar

When in need of a break from studying for final exams or writing final term papers, look no further than this joyful city we call our own. The holiday spirit is just one step out the front door. Take a look at a few of the upcoming events located downtown, just blocks from campus, to get both your holiday fix and much deserved study break. All of the events are free to attend.

City of Charleston Tree Lighting Ceremony
December 5, 4 p.m.
Marion Square Park

Come out to Marion Square to ring in the beginning of the holiday season with the annual tree lighting ceremony. In addition to seeing the lighting of the grand 64-foot tree, there will be live music by local bands, gospel groups and school choruses.

Charleston Holiday Farmers Market
Saturday and Sunday from December 5 – 20, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Marion Square Park

The Farmers Market will commence its holiday festivities December 5. Make sure to make your way there to buy some unique holiday gifts.

35th Annual Charleston Christmas Parade
December 6, 2 p.m.
Downtown Charleston (Broad Street, Calhoun Street, King Street)

Take a walk downtown this Sunday to see the annual Christmas parade. There will more than likely be dogs dressed in holiday gear…what more convincing do you need?

Chanukah in the Square 2015
December 6, 4-6 p.m.
Marion Square Park

After the Christmas parade, head to Marion Square for the 11th annual Chanukah in the Square. There will be hot food and live music, so don’t forget to bring an empty stomach and your dancing shoes.

Candlelight Christmas Concert
December 7, 7:30 p.m.
Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul (126 Coming Street)

Check out the College of Charleston Concert Choir’s performance of traditional holiday carols at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. With your student ID, admission is free.

Cougar Countdown Holiday Card Making Event
December 8, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Stern Student Center

In the midst of exam week, make time to visit Stern Center on December 8 to channel your stress into holiday joy by making cards. This event is sponsored by Cougar Countdown, a program active during finals to help alleviate the stress students feel during the final exam period. Annual Holiday Parade of Boats
December 12, 5 p.m.
Charleston Harbor

This fun event featuring Charlestonians showing off their holiday-themed boats begins around 5 p.m. on December 12. To view The Parade Of Boats from the Charleston Peninsula, spectators should grab a spot by 6:30 p.m.
