The State reported earlier this afternoon that Gov. Haley will endorse Sen. Marco Rubio this evening ahead of Saturday’s Republican primary. Her support joins tat of prominent South Carolina Republicans Sen. Tim Scott and Rep. Trey Gowdy.
Rubio is currently polling third in South Carolina, behind Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.
The endorsement comes as somewhat of a surprise. As recently as Tuesday, Haley told reporters that she was undecided about who to support in the presidential election. Some experts also expected her support to go to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who collaborated with Haley while he was in office. Earlier this week, George W. Bush was campaigning for his brother in North Charleston. The former President responded indirectly to Trump’s repeated attacks on his brother Jeb. “In my experience, the strongest person usually isn’t the loudest in the room,” he said according to CNN.
Bush is currently polling fifth, behind Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Kasich.
The next Republican primary will be in Nevada on Feb. 23. Democrats will vote in the South Carolina primary on Feb. 27.
