On Thursday evening, Cedric Larry Ford went on a shooting spree in Hesston, Kansas that left three dead and 14 injured. Ford was an employee at Excel Industries, a lawn equipment company, where the majority of the violence took place. The incident occurred between 5:00 – 5:45 p.m., when Ford failed to return from a work break. Instead, he opened fire from a car with an assault rifle and a semiautomatic pistol. Ford was fatally shot by Hesston Police Chief Doug Schroeder.
Ford drove from one town to another, but the Excel plant appears to have been the main target.
According to Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton and several witnesses, the suspected shooter was either a current employee or a past employee of Excel Industries. Some sources cited personal problems that the employee was going through, specifically referencing a recent break-up. Ford had several convictions in other states prior to the incident in Hesston, including a history of domestic violence.
“There’s going to be a lot of sad people before this is all over,” Walton commented.
