Volleyball Season Preview

The College of Charleston volleyball team began the season playing host to the CofC Invitational on Aug. 26 and Aug. 27.

The Cougars (2-1) bookended a loss to South Carolina with wins in straight sets over University of Tennessee at Martin and Binghamton.

Early struggles hurt Charleston’s record last season, as they lost four of their first seven games. The Cougars managed to finish the season (20-13) with an appearance in the CAA finals.

The Cougars trip to the CAA finals was their third consecutive trip and they look to get back there again this season.

It is a team that only brings back six returning players with an additional nine newcomers. Despite a lot of new faces, Coach Jason Kepner is confident in his team.

“It’s a great group [of girls] they are very athletic,” Kepner said.

Junior team captain Krissy Mummey and sophomore Kennedy Madison received Honorable Mentions on the preseason All-CAA team.

“I want to fill my role as captain and make sure everyone can step up as much as me,” Mummey said.

In addition, the Cougars have added John Lucas to their coaching staff. Lucas played college volleyball at Lees-McRae University from 2011-2014 and during the 2015 season was an assistant for William and Mary.

The addition of Lucas helps the Cougars with his experience coaching a conference foe.

Charleston looks to continue their success in the hopes of becoming regular season champions for the 15th time in 16 seasons.

The Cougars are set to play in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the Demon Deacon Classic. The tournament is from Sept. 2. through Sept. 3.
