Under the Christmas tree: A holiday gift guide

The semester is winding down and finding the time to search for the perfect gift can be extremely tough. Especially when you want to scope out the perfect gift for loved ones and friends! Here are a few ideas that will help you stay organized this holiday season and make your gift shopping trips more enjoyable.

If your mom is anything like mine, she would love to do an activity together rather than receive a gift. Something that does not cost too much but is still a thoughtful gesture is planning a “girls day” with her. Whether this is going out for brunch at your favorite café, wandering the streets window shopping in town, or treating her to a manicure at her favorite nail salon – this gift is more meaningful than simply handing her a gift card and leaving it at that. Creating memories with your mom is more valuable than any material item you could gift her.

Dads are notoriously the most difficult to shop for around the holidays. When brainstorming ideas, think about how you would describe your dad to someone. Is he a sports fan? A good cook? A music lover? These questions will help navigate you towards the perfect gift for him! If he is a fan of a specific sports team, maybe pick up a jersey or baseball hat for him with the team’s logo on it. If he enjoys cooking, do some research and find a cookbook he would enjoy. If he likes music, consider getting him a t-shirt of his favorite band or purchasing a classic album that he does not already have in his collection. What he will truly love is the time and effort you put into getting him something special, not matter what the size or price of it is.

For your brother, there are many options of useful gifts he will throughly enjoy. If he likes video games, check out the electronics department and browse for newly released games he can play over the holiday break. Another choice would be a t-shirt of his favorite sports team, in this case check out Amazon or Barstool Sports for tons of choices! Or maybe pick up something he would not normally buy for himself such as a nice button-down shirt or tie. When all else fails, gift cards for Itunes or even Chipotle always do the job.

Finding the perfect gift for your sister can be tough. You typically want to choose a special item she will love, but also keep it within your budget. Consider getting her jewelry with a meaningful message behind it. Check out Etsy to personalize a piece or Dogeared Jewelry for unique and sentimental necklaces. Not too fond of jewelry? Pick her up a new perfume or a gift set from Sephora or Lush filled with luxurious goodies that will pamper and help her to relax over the holiday break!

Friends are the most fun to shop for because they typically have similar interests to your own. For the friend that loves to travel, pick up a printed luggage tag or a journal for her to write out her bucket list or experiences when jet setting to foreign places. For the fashion and beauty lover, think about getting her a beauty gift set or some cold weather accessories such as a new scarf or hat to rock this winter. For the coffee addict, pick up a cute mug and a gift card to their favorite coffee shop or a café they have not tried before that you know they will love!

The holidays can be a stressful time, but it is important to remember that it is not about how much you spend or the size of your gift, it is the thought and time you put into it. Have a Merry Christmas and happy holiday!
