How to host: Galentine’s Day

It is February, which means one thing: Valentine’s Day. Heart candies, tacky cards and giant teddy bears have been bombarding the store aisles, you either love it or hate it. Whether you are spending Cupid’s holiday with a special sweetheart or happily single, throwing a Galentine’s Day party for you and your closest friends is a perfect time to celebrate with all the people you love!

You will need awesome decorations to make your space feel festive! Pink and red balloons are easy and simple to add and instantly put you in the Valentine spirit. Giant “XO” balloons can also be fun additions and will look strikingly beautiful in the background of you and your friends pics! Make sure you pick up pink plates, napkins and cups to keep with the girly theme of your Galentine celebration. Feeling a little crafty? An easy DIY decor project to try is taking a white tablecloth and creating a sharpie “XO” print all over it. Not only will it look adorable, but it also adds a personal, charming touch to your get-together.

Music is essential when throwing a party. If you are in a pinch on some good tunes, choose a premade soundtrack like Spotify’s “Girl Night.” Or put your DJ skills to the test by creating your own playlist filled with throwback classics like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson to blast and sing along to throughout the night.

When thinking about what food to serve your friends, you may be quick to  jump to typical Valentine’s Day treats: chocolates, tubs of ice cream and red velvet cakes. Although these options are great (and delicious), try serving something a little healthier that your friends will appreciate. Throw together a salad mixed with pink and red fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, watermelon or grapefruit. Not only will this will look festive, but it also will taste just as sweet as sugar covered candies. Whip up some banana “nice cream” added with strawberries to give it a delightful pink hue. Along with your ice cream, set up a toppings bar with nuts, chocolate chips and fruit for your guests to create their own ice cream sundae! For a chocolate fix try these delectable chocolate coconut truffles:

Chocolate Coconut Truffles:

  • 1 cup of pitted dates
  • 3 tablespoons of oats
  • ¼ cup of shredded coconut
  • 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder

  1. Soak your dates overnight or place them in a bowl of hot water for 5-10 minutes to get them soft. Remove the pit and place them in a food processor transforming them into a paste. You may need to add a tablespoon or two of water if your food processor needs assistance.
  2. Add in the rest of your ingredients into the food processor and combine until a tacky, dough-like consistency forms. If it is too wet, add in more oats. If it is too dry, simply add more water.
  3. Roll the dough into small bite-sized balls.
  4. Take your balls and roll them in any extra coconut shreds or cacao powder. *Optional: after rolling the chocolate balls put them in the freezer to get firm. Dip them in melted chocolate for an extra indulgent treat!
  5. Place in the fridge until ready to serve.

If you are over 21, pop some pink champagne served with strawberries in the flutes for all your guests. You can also make a mixed drink with vodka, Sprite and pink lemonade to sip on throughout the night. Under 21? Just omit the vodka and enjoy!

During your Galentine’s Day, decide on a romantic movie lineup that will keep you and your girlfriends entertained all night. But remember, nothing too sappy that will leave your guests in tears (avoid Nicholas Sparks at all costs!). Instead, try selecting classic rom-coms like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “13 Going on 30” or “Bridesmaids” – classic comedies and crowd pleasers.

A special touch to your Galentine’s Day bash is to give your friends a little gift before they leave. Choose a red nail polish, lipstick or little Hershey kisses with a sweet note expressing how much you love and appreciate them!

For some, Valentine’s Day may be overrated, but in the end, it is a great excuse to throw a party for you and your close friends. From CisternYard News, hoping your Galentine’s day celebration is full of fun, love and tons of chocolate!
