On Sunday, Feb. 25th the College of Charleston Women’s Basketball team hosted the Northeastern Huskies at TD Arena for Senior Day. Charleston honored their three graduating seniors Shiclasia Brown, Tanisha Brown and Brianna Boyd prior to the game with a ceremony.
Shiclasia Brown was touted for her career totals of 572 points, 247 rebounds, 315 assists and 109 steals in 114 games with the Cougars. Tanisha Brown was remembered for her 21-career double-doubles and her eight 20-point scoring performances.
Entering this game, the Cougars were plunged at the bottom of the conference while the Huskies sat in fifth place, six games off top of the conference James Madison and seven games off the bottom.
The College came out sluggish as Northeastern went on a 9-0 run to kick the game off. Charleston battled back with Deja Ford scoring two lay-ups on back to back possessions, but the offense really struggled to get going. The Huskies kept on wearing down the Cougar defense and continued to score. After the first quarter, Charleston trailed 22-10.
To start the second quarter, Charleston began to find their offensive groove. Tanisha Brown led the Cougars, scoring eight points in the half. Deja Ford and Bri Sullivan followed suit, both scoring four points respectively. Despite the strong effort from these three players, The College could not matchup defensively, and conceded 15 points in the second quarter.
The teams entered the locker rooms with the Cougars trailing 37-19.
Following the break, Northeastern once again came out strong while Charleston was still sleeping. Immediately at the start of the third quarter, Shiclasia Brown dribbled the ball straight into her own half of the court for a backcourt violation on a mind-boggling play. Tanisha Brown continued her strong offensive performance in the third quarter and the Huskies struggled as the period progressed. The Cougars held Northeastern to only 12 points in the quarter and managed to score 14 points of their own.
Northeastern gathered themselves for the fourth quarter and proceeded to once again take control of the game. The last few minutes were needless as the Huskies cruised to an easy 67-48 win. The Cougars record now falls to 2-14 for the season.
Shiclasia Brown struggled in her final home game as a Cougar, shooting 0-2 from the field, with her sole point of the game coming from the free throw line. She also struggled to keep Northeastern guard Stella Clark under wraps as she went on to score nine points and assist her teammates five times.
On Saturday, March 3rd, the College of Charleston Women’s Basketball team will play their final game of this rough season away at Drexel. They sit in last place, one game behind UNCW who are in ninth.
