Steven Long, a Republican member of the South Carolina House of Representatives is planning on giving guns away to teachers in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting which left 17 dead on Valentine’s Day. If Long’s name sounds familiar, it is. CisternYard previously reported that the Spartanburg Representative co-authored a marriage bill which many view as controversial.
Now Long wants to give guns to teachers – a policy that many think unjustly overloads teachers with responsibility. Long says he is holding the giveaway to demonstrate support for the Second Amendment, The State reports.
As mentioned on his website, Long is planning on giving guns to three individuals:
- One to a K-12 teacher, school staff member, or school administrator
- One to a higher education (college/university) faculty, staff member, or administrator
- One to any freedom-loving patriot who wishes to participate in the drawing
A donation page is up on Long’s website with the proceeds going to 9mm Smith & Wesson Shield Handguns which will be distributed. Donations are not required to enter the giveaway which also has a page on Long’s website. The winners of the giveaway would also be given a gift certificate for classes to obtain concealed weapons permits.
According to Long’s website, “We must do everything we can to ensure the safety of children in schools, both K-12 and our higher education institutions. Allowing teachers or school staff members to carry is the most efficient and most effective way to do this.”
