Senate Summary for the Week of 10/22/2018

The following was written by SGA President, Tripp Keeffe detailing last weeks Senate session.

The sixth Senate session of the 2018-2019 academic year on Tuesday Sep. 23 was an interesting one! The meeting kicked off with Provost Brian McGee presenting as a guest speaker. Provost McGee discussed his own connection to Student Government, stating he participated in undergrad, graduate and even in faculty senate. He also discussed the role of the Provost and its duties. Provost McGee’s job is to make sure everyone receives a worthwhile education. Provost McGee addressed current initiatives and changes occurring in the college, including the formation of a center for studying slavery in Charleston and widening study abroad scholarships. It was an honor to listen to Provost McGee present.

After the Q&A following the Provost’s speech, I gave my weekly president’s report. I highlighted the upcoming public safety walk on November 7th at 5:30 p.m. at the public safety office. The walk will stop at potentially uncomfortable areas on campus. The event is open to the student body and food will be provided so please make sure to participate and make your opinion heard. If you need more details or would like to RSVP, email me at .

After the rest of the President’s report, two clubs attended the meeting to petition for additional funding. The Senate allocated money to Prism for an upcoming talk featuring a prominent member of the LGBTQ+ community. The Senate approved additional funding for the College Democrats for shirts and a banner.  There is still contingency money left, so make sure apply before the Senate is no longer active in the next two weeks.

Lastly, the Senate voted down the final bill of the day, a resolution for support of the Beatty Business School expansion.  To read more about specifics of the day and the discussions, make sure to look at the minutes on the website. The live stream for this week had difficulties, but next week everyone should be able to once again tune in and watch senate in action. Have a great week Cougars!
