The College of Charleston women’s basketball team were back at home to pay the Winthrop University Eagles Thursday night.
The Cougars lost to the Eagles, 71-64.
The two teams were neck and neck for most of the first half. College of Charleston led the game at halftime 30-25. Senior guard, Darien Huff led the game in points with 10. The two teams gave each other problems defensively. Winthrop totaled 14 turnovers and The College totaled 18. College of Charleston help Winthrop to 30.3% from the field for the half.
In the second half, Winthrop secured a lead by as many as eight. The Cougars fought hard and made a run in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to get the victory against the Winthrop Eagles. Winthrop shot 50% from the field and forced 11 turnovers.
Winthrop’s Miquela Santoro led the game in scoring with 18 points. She also had three rebounds, three assist and three steals for the night. Winthrop guard Anika Riley led the game in rebounds with 11.
Ericka Broughton hosted a block party in TD Arena Thursday night. Ericka led the game with blocks with five and also had four rebounds and four points for the night.
Senior Darien Huff led the Cougars in scoring with 15, followed by Latrice Perkins’ 11. Darien Huff also led the team in rebounds with six.
This loss to Winthrop marks the fourth straight for the women Cougars basketball team. Cougars are currently 2-4 for the season are in ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association. College of Charleston starts a short, two game road trip against Appalachian State Sunday. The Cougars look to bounce back and get a win on this road trip against Appalachian State and Lipscomb University
