Since it’s opening in 2017, Basic Kitchen has established itself as one of the most unique dining experiences in the Charleston area. Over a year ago Vogue claimed, “Basic Kitchen may just be Charleston’s most quintessential place to dine.” In a city dense with culinary talent, Basic stands out as a restaurant driven to make health-food approachable, beautiful, and flavorful.
Situated just off King on Wentworth, you cannot help but notice the buzz as you walk past the unassuming white building. The grand windows give a glimpse inside and you find a restaurant adorned with soft colors, fine woodwork, bright green plants, and an inviting, energizing atmosphere.
The menu at Basic is refreshing both in it’s seasonal, local produce and its lack of pretentiousness that comes with most health-food spots. Dishes are comprised simply, most with only a few elements, but are full of flavor and leave the vegetable as the centerpiece of the dish. The Roasted Brussel Sprouts are a perfect example, dressed in a prune and pine nut agrodolce that balances sweet, sour, and nutty. Although the dish is full of strong flavors, it does not mask the star of the dish; crispy brussels.
The Mushroom Rillette was another tasteful appetizer. Enhancing bold mushroom flavors, it is a wonderful adaptation to a classic meat-based spread.
Utilizing the beautiful bounty of Charleston, the Carolina Wreckfish displays what Basic is all about. Seared local wreckfish laid upon a bed of softly cooked local peas, local beans, tomatoes and arugula. A beautiful plate that shows what health-food should really be about: local, fresh, delicious.
With a menu so full of healthy bites, Basic also does guilty pleasure justice with the Naughty Burger. This burger fits perfectly on the menu as an item that reminds you not to take eating healthy too seriously. 100% grass fed beef, aged cheddar, griddled onions, pickles, and that’s it because that’s all the burger needs. Like most of the menu, the burger makes a statement about the ingredients by keeping it simple and showcasing just how good grass-fed beef is.
With a relaxed ambiance, stunning décor, and tasty menu; Basic is a restaurant that should be added to everyone’s “2019 must go” list. Perfect for a night out with friends, a quick lunch, and especially date night.
To welcome in the new year Basic Kitchen has opened Tuesday nights up to celebrate Neighborhood Night, where they will be offering $10 burgers and half-off bottles of wine under $60. Students and professors receive 15% off any meal 7 days a week with ID. On a campus surrounded by fast food and salads in plastic bowls, this is the best option students have for a quality sit down meal that will not break the bank.
