Senate Session Summary for the week of 1/29/2019

The following is a letter written to the Campus Community from SGA President Tripp Keeffe on Senate Sessions

Dear Campus Community,

The 12th session of Senate 2018-2019 kicked off with a guest speaker from Charleston Miracle Network. The speaker addressed how  Miracle Network raises money  in Charleston and explained Cougarthon, which will be occurring this semester.  The live stream on the  SGA Facebook page includes more information about Cougarthon, should you be interested in participating.

Following the speakers remarks, I delivered the President’s. Additionally, no clubs approached the Senate for appropriations.  Notably, the Senate passed a resolution approving the changes to the College of Charleston Honor Code.  Currently, if a professor decides to bring a student honor board for academic dishonesty, and that student is found guilty of a violation, the student automatically fails the class. The change in the code gives professor the opportunity to recommend failure in the class; or the option to allow a student to receive a final grade in the class without being immediately failed. However, a notation for academic dishonesty will be recorded on the student’s transcript. It is possible to expunge the notation after appeal.

Additionally,  we moved into Committee Reports after the resolution. Director Lifchez discussed some upcoming initiatives, including care packages for student health services and looking at getting student discounts for fun activities around town. Director Pullin will pursue opportunities to place more bike racks around campus. Director Pullin is also looking into installing an online scheduling system for counseling services on campus. Director Rothstein will be rolling out  a new system which allows students to rent inflatable couches and blankets for use in outdoor campus space the week of Feb. 4.  Couches and blankets can be rented in two hour blocks from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lastly, Director Thompson will be working to integrate American Sign Language onto campus as an accredited language class as well as setting condom dispensers up around campus.  To see more about senate you can access the live stream once again on the SGA facebook page. You can also stay up to date on SGA events by following the instagram @cofc.sga. Have a great week Cougars!
