On Jan. 30 the College of Charleston celebrated its 249th birthday as Interim President Stephen Osborne stood among the Oaks of the Cistern Yard, surrounded by Chucktown Sound, and nearly 150 faculty, staff, and students.
A giant banner, draped in a white cloth was propped in front of Randolph Hall was. Lighting, a brief smoke show, and music from Chucktown Sound filled the Cistern Yard as the white cloth dropped, unveiling the new theme. History. Made. Here.
The theme was chosen by CofC students and staff after a brief survey was sent to College of Charleston emails during the fall semester.
“From having three signers of the Declaration of Independence and three signers of the Constitution to graduating numerous alumni who have left their mark on the world and advanced our society through their tireless efforts, The College has a very strong and consistent track record in the history books,” said President Osborne. He continued to discuss the college’s success in academic research and athletics.
Cande Cook has been hired as the project director for the 250th year celebration, and seven committees have formed for the planning process.
It was also announced that after President Osborne’s term ends in May, he will continue to work at the College as senior level leadership role for the 250th board of directors.
“While our past is certainly rich with exciting moments, it’s our bright future that is waiting for us to create more historical moments,” said Osborne.
